Sidney City Schools is seeking candidates for the position of Superintendent.

The Sidney City School District Board of Education is searching for a new Superintendent. The District looks to the future as it embraces the ever-changing landscape of education by maintaining financial stability, strong leadership, and quality education.

Leadership Criteria

The Sidney City School District Board of Education has identified the following qualifications as having particular importance for the position of Superintendent. The ideal candidate must be committed to the highest personal and professional standards and exhibit leadership throughout the district.

Candidate Qualifications

Must hold an Ohio Superintendent license.
Possess a strong administrative background in public schools.
Experience as a school administrator with superintendent, assistant superintendent,
or other central office experience preferred.
Commitment to the highest personal and professional standards.
A comprehensive understanding of Ohio school law, finance and regulations, and financial reporting.
Self-starting skills with a positive team attitude.
Keen business management skills in the areas of long-range planning, fiscal forecasting, personnel management, collective bargaining, and insurance management.
The ability to work as an articulate, straightforward communicator with strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work with school board members, administrators, staff, students, parents, the community, and elected officials.
Visionary and strong multi-tasking skills, with the ability to organize and synthesize information efficiently, which produces short and long-range plans for continuous improvement.
Personal integrity, as well as a record of being loyal, positive, enthusiastic, and organized with a strong work ethic.
Be a relationship builder who understands the culture, history, tradition, and basic values in our close-knit community.
Have success in improving academic achievement with a demonstrated ability to define and implement continuous improvement strategies.

Our district is made up of approximately 3,300 students, 6 schools, 200 teachers, and 150 support staff such as aides, custodians, bus drivers, cooks, and secretaries. Each school also has a security officer or SRO and a trained emergency response team for student and staff safety.

Extracurricular Activities

Starting as early as fifth and sixth grade, we offer our students a variety of boys, girls, and co-ed sports and provide our students the opportunity to become members and leaders of clubs. Students may also choose to become involved in our highly successful music program by taking band, choir, or orchestra.

Early childhood education lays the groundwork for the development of a lifelong learner. Whittier Early Childhood Center staff strive to support the whole child by providing learning opportunities in all areas of development including social-emotional skills and academic foundations.

CCP & AP Courses

Sidney High School offers its students more than 25 college credit plus and advanced placement courses, allowing students to take and earn credit for college-level courses while staying at Sidney High School. Some students are able to obtain an associate's degree in tandem with their high school diploma.

Our Schools

Sidney City Schools is comprised of six schools and an online learning academy.

Whittier Early Childhood Center is Sidney City Schools' in-house preschool program which serves both students on IEPs and those who are typically developing starting at age three. WECC introduces learning through play and exploration. Students have access to speech, physical, and occupational therapy support through one-on-one and small-group instruction.

Emerson Primary and Longfellow Primary serve kindergarten through second grade students. Each school has five teachers per grade level, a dedicated principal, a school counselor, and cross-categorical classrooms. The two schools share teachers for physical, art, and music education.

Northwood Intermediate serves third and fourth grade students. Unique to Northwood Intermediate, as a part of its special classes rotation, is STEAM—science, technology, engineering, art, and math— a hands-on science approach incorporating real-world skills that transcend into all academic areas as well as beyond the classroom. Northwood teachers are also supported by a variety of academic and support staff.

Sidney Middle School serves fifth through eighth grade students. At SMS, students have more opportunities to explore their interests through elective classes like STEM, art, band, choir, orchestra, technology, Design & Modeling, and Workforce. Students are supported by dedicated intervention specialists in each grade, two school psychologists, and two school counselors. Staff is supported by an administrative team of a principal and two assistant principals.

Sidney High School serves ninth through twelfth grade students and boasts many academic, co-curricular, and extra-curricular opportunities for students to succeed and engage in their school and community. 18 College Credit Plus classes and a variety of career pathways sets our high school students up for success. Sidney High School students looking for career technical education attend Upper Valley Career Center in neighboring Piqua, OH.

Sidney City Schools recognizes that no two children learn the same; Jacket Virtual Academy is an online learning community open to students in grades 5-12.

Other alternative education opportunities are available for students who require it.

Preschool

Sidney City Schools recognizes the importance of early childhood education. As educators, it is our goal to support the whole child by providing learning opportunities in all areas of development including social-emotional skills and academic foundations.

Sidney City Schools’ preschool program is housed at Whittier Early Childhood Center. Serving both students on IEPs and those who are typically developing starting at age three, WECC introduces learning through play and exploration. Students with disabilities attend preschool for free, while those who are typically developing pay tuition on a sliding scale.

The dedicated staff at Whittier Early Childhood Center has earned and maintains a Step Up to Quality 5-Star distinction through the state of Ohio.

1:1 Chromebook Initiative

Sidney City Schools has reached a 1:1 device status, where every student has a school-issued device to use.

At the primary level, though there is one device per student, those devices are kept at school. At the intermediate school level, devices mostly remain at school with some chances for them to be taken home depending on the situation. In middle school, students are issued a device at the beginning of the year to keep and use between school and home; this practice continues through high school.

Being 1:1 with devices has allowed greater access to technology while preparing our students to succeed in the ever-changing, and increasingly-technological, world.

College & Career Readiness

Many educators and education experts stress the importance of college and career readiness in students, particularly at the high school level. Sidney City Schools administration and teachers have worked to institute this important concept into the curriculum at SHS.

Sidney High School partners with Edison State Community College to offer college courses on the Sidney High School campus through Colleges Credit Plus. More than 18 College Credit Plus courses are available at Sidney High School. Students are also able to take classes off the school campus on the college campus of Edison State Community College or online. Sidney High School counselors work directly with Edison State to ensure student success.

Workforce Partnership & Career Coach

Sidney City Schools works with the local Workforce Partnership of Shelby County to support career readiness for students in grades 7-12. In addition to career preparation courses, a Career Coach, funded by the Workforce Partnership of Shelby County and the Shelby County United Way, works 1-on-1 with students to assess their skills and interests and connect them employers who are hiring which match their skill set. The goal is to ensure those students who do not have plans following graduation are linked with local employers for suitable and sustaining employment.

Residents of all ages can choose from a number of recreational activities, public arts programs, concerts, and celebrations. Vibrant downtown Sidney boasts fine dining, shopping, and plentiful entertainment experiences. Our community celebrates the outdoors with the vast 226-acre Tawawa Park and neighborhood parks system. Sidney is the trailhead to the Great Miami Riverway.

Industry opportunities are endless. Some of the best-advanced manufacturing, engineering, and agriculture-based jobs in the state can be found in Sidney and surrounding Shelby County.
