Gifted Education
Sidney City Schools works to serve those with gifted needs. Education acceleration is one of the cornerstones of exemplary gifted education practices.
Identified gifted students and those with high abilities need education programs that will challenge them in regular classroom settings and enrichment and accelerated programs to enable them to make continuous progress in school.
Our gifted education services seek to meet the needs of students through acceleration. Acceleration occurs when students move through the traditional curriculum at rates faster than typical. Among the many forms of acceleration are grade-skipping, early entrance to kindergarten or college, dual-credit courses such as Advanced Placement and College Credit Plus programs, or subject-based acceleration (e.g., when a fifth-grade student takes a 6th-grade math course).
Our district uses a three-stage approach to screen and identify students who perform or show potential for performing at high levels of accomplishment in the areas of superior cognitive ability, specific academic ability, creativity, and visual and/or performing arts. If students are identified as gifted, our curriculum department works to develop a plan to meet their learning needs.
