December 8, 2018 - Sidney City Schools is working to develop a plan to bring preschool back to Sidney City Schools from Shelby Hills Early Childhood Center.

Sidney Alternative School Building to Close Sidney Alternative School

Over the past five years, Sidney City Schools has been able to help hundreds of students reach the ultimate educational goal of graduation thanks to the Sidney Alternative School. In recent years, however, the district has seen a decrease in the number of students needing this special service and has therefore deemed it worthwhile to absorb the alternative school program into our middle school and high school buildings.

Sidney Music Boosters Asks the Community to Chill...the Auditorium

Anyone who has gone to a music concert at Sidney High School in the late spring or attended Senior Awards Night at the end of the school year can attest to just how hot the Sidney High School Auditorium can get. Beyond comfort in the auditorium and music rooms, temperature control is vital to extending the life of musical instruments stores in our music rooms. The heat and humidity can cause great stress on the instruments and shorten their lifespan. A campaign to cool down the Sidney High School Auditorium and music wing is now underway.

Join Sidney Athletics in supporting the campaign for a new multisport athletic center. Adjoined to the Sidney Memorial Stadium, this facility will enhance the Sidney sports complex and expand indoor practice/training capacities for all sports, especially those that take place in the spring.

Class of 2019 Senior & Parent Night Senior & Parent Night - Class of 2019 - Announcement

September 5, 2019 - Sidney High School Counseling Department will be hosting a Senior & Parent Night for the Class of 2019 on Wednesday, September 19 from 6:30-7:30pm in the SHS Auditorium. It will be an informational evening to help plan the steps to graduation and beyond. 

Small group sessions will include FAFSA in 15, To Retake or Not Retake the ACT?, Common Sense for the Common App, Been There/Done That, Maximize your CCP Credits, and What Is The Raeburn E. Barnes Trust Student Loan Program? - other information will be available regarding UVCC Adult Education, military options, Workforce Partnership of Shelby County, and local scholarships including the Community Foundation of Shelby County.

Immunization Clinic at SMS Open House

August 2, 2018 - Sidney-Shelby County Health Department will host an Immunization Clinic for all incoming 7th graders during the Sidney Middle School Open House on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, from 5-7pm.

Freshman Orientation Scheduled for August 16

August 1, 2018 - Sidney High School administration and staff have decided to try something new to capture incoming freshmen and transfer students to best set them up for success at Sidney High School. The school will host a Freshman Orientation Day on the first day of school, Thursday, August 16, 2018. Only freshmen and transfer students will be required to attend that day, with all upper-class students starting on Friday, August 17.

Sidney Memorial Stadium Enters 15th Season...Tour Planned

It's been many years since the Sidney High School class of 1973 had a reunion but it's set to return home this coming weekend including a Saturday morning (July 28) 10am tour of Sidney Memorial Stadium that will also be open to the public.

"I haven't done one of these for several years but I'm glad to include SHS 1973 along with anyone else who may be interested," said original stadium committee member Dave Ross. "Lots of fans have been to football games in the facility and they know how it feels on game night. I'll concentrate on the history of high school football in Sidney and how that led to the Memorial title and theme by visiting various commemorations throughout the stadium. I especially welcome folks who are new to the community as we enter our 15th season."

Attendees should park in the lot closest to the main entrance. Plan to arrive by 9:50 at the main entrance monument where the tour will commence promptly at 10am.

Sidney City Schools Names Bob Humble New Superintendent Robert "Bob" Humble

The Sidney City Schools Board of Education is pleased to welcome Mr. Robert “Bob” Humble as the new leader of the district. The board held a special meeting Thursday, June 28, and unanimously voted to hire Humble as SCS Superintendent.

SMS Recognizes Student Achievements 7th Grade Award Ceremony 2018

June 4, 2018 - Sidney Middle School recently held its academic awards programs for grades 5-8. Awards were presented by principals Diane Voress, Kevin Boerger, and Chris Barr, as well as various classroom teachers. Honor roll awards were presented to students who achieved accordingly for all the first 3 nine-weeks grading periods. Perfect attendance students were entered in drawings for $50 cash prize incentives. Student Council members acted as ushers. The Friend of SMS Award honored Tim Clayton and Ron Burns as Sidney PeeWee Football Coaches for their many years of service to the students of Sidney Middle School.

Additional Superintendent Search Focus Groups to be Held

The Sidney Board of Education has contracted with the Ohio School Board Association to oversee the search for a new superintendent to replace John Scheu. As part of the effort to make the best possible selection, OSBA consultant Cheryl Ryan spent time with members of the district in focus groups to learn more about the community's expectations. The board will hold two additional public focus groups Monday, June 11, at 4:00pm and 6:00pm in the basement community room of the Board of Education offices. 

Adams Named Teacher of the Year by SEA Chris Adams - SEA Teacher of the Year

June 1, 2018 - The Sidney Education Association held their awards dinner in May. The evening, filled with laughter and tears, celebrated various teachers for accomplishments and achievements throughout the year, as well as those who from the community who have positively impacted the education of Sidney City Schools students. Members honored Chris Adams, Band Director at Sidney Middle and High School, as Teacher of the Year.

Sidney High School Seniors Achieve Top Honors Summa Cum Laude - SHS 2018

June 1, 2018– Sidney High School seniors were recently recognized for their academic honors. Highest honors went to 12 members of the SHS Class of 2018 who earned the Summa Cum Laude distinction including: Allyson (Ally) Ball, Jennifer (Jenny) Barnes, Andrew Blackford, Laura Brady, Jenna Fields, Gage Fridley, Sean Martin, Caroline (Carrie) Nuss, Travis Oltman, Troy Oltman, Dylan Smith, and Chase VanTilburgh. To earn this distinction, students had to achieve a cumulative GPA of 4.25 or greater and meet the criteria of an Honors Diploma, fulfilling all but one of the following: 4 English credits, 4 math credits, 4 science credits (including units of advanced science), 4 social studies credits, 3 credits in one foreign language or 2 credits each in two foreign languages, 1 fine arts credit, GPA of at least 3.5, and an ACT score of 27+ or an SAT score of 1220+.  

Superintendent Search Focus Group Meetings

Sidney City Schools Board of Education has contracted with the Ohio School Board Association (OSBA) to conduct the superintendent search for the district. In our effort to make the best possible selection, we have included in the search process a time for our consultant, Cheryl Ryan, to meet with staff, students, and community in a series of focus group meetings. The public is welcome to attend the last group of the day at 4:30PM.

Dr. Brian Powderly Named SHS Principal Dr. Brian Powderly - Sidney High School Principal

May 30, 2018 - Sidney City Schools Board of Education is proud to announce they have named Dr. Brian Powderly the new Sidney High School principal beginning the 2018-2019 school year. Powderly has most recently served for five years as high school principal at Monroe Local Schools in Monroe, Ohio. Prior to that, he was the high school principal at Milton-Union High School for eight years.

District Addresses Threat Against “SHS”

In response to a threat made about “SHS” that has been circulating on Facebook tonight, February 21, 2018:

Sidney PD and Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, as well as other law enforcement agencies throughout the state, have investigated the threat and determined it came from outside of Ohio. 

Increased law enforcement personnel will be present throughout the district tomorrow and the security officers and First Responder Teams have been made aware of the issue. Additional steps have been put in place to ensure student safety.

The district takes these matter very seriously and the safety of our students, your children, is of utmost importance.

SCS Sets Kindergarten Registration and Screening

Sidney City Schools kindergarten screening and registration for the 2018-2019 school year will be held April 9-13, 2018, at Connection Point Church, 1510 Campbell Road, Sidney. Children must be five years of age on or before August 1, 2018, to enroll in the Sidney City Schools kindergarten program. To schedule a screening time, parents/guardians are asked to contact their home elementary building secretary before March 23, 2018. 

Honoring SHS Alumnus Marcus Goffena Marcus Goffena T-Shirt

To honor 2005 Sidney High School athlete and alumnus Marcus Goffena, who tragically died while removing a TV station antennae in Miami, Florida on September 27, a limited number of t-shirts will be sold at this Thursday's home football game vs Tipp City. The cost per shirt will be $20, with all proceeds to benefit the Sidney Athletic 200 Club, per the family's request, and allow for a memorial tree to be planted in Marcus' name.

Unusual Odor at SHS

An unusual sewage gas odor was detected at Sidney High School today, causing some students to become ill. Sidney Fire inspected the building and has deemed it safe to be in the building; however, classes located in the area of the smell moved to another location in the building.

Sidney/Piqua to Team Up to Defeat Cancer Sidney Piqua Colon Cancer T-Shirt

September 15, 2017 - Sidney and Piqua are putting rivalries aside to raise awareness of colon cancer in honor of Michelle Garber, mother of Piqua senior volleyball player Navie Garber, who has been diagnosed with colon cancer. Student leadership groups from both schools will be selling t-shirts to benefit the Upper Valley Cancer Care Center for Colon Research, as well as the Garber family.

September 7, 2017 - Sidney City Schools will be taking part in a collection of hurricane relief items in cooperation of the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce and Sidney Transportation Services.

A semi trailer, provided by Steve Woodruff of Sidney Transportation Services, will be parked in front of Sidney Memorial Stadium Friday, September 8 – Friday, September 15.

Great American Eclipse- August 21

The Great American Eclipse is taking place on August 21 (first day of school), between the hours of 1:02pm and 3:51pm. Due to the dangers associated with the viewing the eclipse, Sidney City Schools will adhere to the following guidelines that day:

  • Only students with protective eclipse glasses will be permitted outside with staff supervision to observe the eclipse and the school's code of conduct will be in effect.
  • Parents will have the opportunity to opt out of permitting their child to view this experience by notifying their building principal.
  • Under no circumstance should students be outside (eg. recess) during this time without protective eclipse glasses.
  • Students should be reminded when departing for the day that they should not gaze at the eclipse.

​​​​​​The concern is gazing at the eclipse with a naked eye for a period of time could result in damage to the retina of the eye, and may not show up until "down the road."

SHS Freshman Orientation

Sidney High School will hold Freshman Orientation for the Class of 2021 August 14 & 15. Incoming freshman may choose to attend one of two orientations:
August 14, 2017 - 9:00am-11:00am
August 15, 2017 - 5:00pm-7:00pm 

Freshmen need to report to the auditorium for a presentation that will begin promptly at 9:00am on August 14 or at 5:00pm on August 15. Parents who drop off their child may wait out in the hall or wait outside until the presentation is completed. Following the presentation, the incoming freshmen will receive their schedule, take a tour of the building, and locate their lockers and classrooms.

Sidney City Schools is exploring the possibility of starting a latchkey, or before/after school care, program for the 2018/2019 school year. Before moving forward with planning, we need to guage interest and need to ensure sustainability. Please complete the linked survey at your convenience.

The Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a business Expo & Job Fair on Thursday, August 3, from 3:00PM to 7:00PM at Sidney Middle School. This expo, free and open to the public to attend, will host exibits from more than 85 organizations operating in Shelby County.

The Chamber Expo offers students a tremendous opportunity to familiarize themselves with both the companies and careers available in Shelby County. High school and college students attending Expo are eligible to win one of two Chromebook computers that will be given away.

Physical Day - May 9

Sidney City Schools will be hosting Physical Day on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 from 5:30-7:30PM at Lehman Catholic High School (enter in Athletic Entrance - Door 10). Physical Day is open to any student athlete in need of a physical. The cost is $15 per physical. Please use the 2017-2018 OHSAA Phycial Form. Physicals must be signed by a parent/guardian before a physical can be given. Please make sure all information is filled out. Physicals may also be used for work permits.

All money raised will be used for athletic training supplies for Sidney City Schools. For questions, call 937-497-2243.

Sidney High School will host the junior/senior prom this year at Sidney High School in the gymnasium Saturday, April 29, from 8:00pm - 11:00pm. Lost at Sea will be the theme. The afterprom will be held at Vandemark Farms.

April 3, 2017 - Kindergarten Registration and Screening for Sidney City Schools takes place this week at Connection Point Church at 1510 Campbell Road, Sidney. Children attending screening should attend on their neighborhood school's designated day: Monday - Emerson Elementary, Tuesday - Northwood Elementary, Wednesday - Whittier Elementary, Thursday - Longfellow Elementary, Friday - make-up day for anyone who could not attend their school's day. September 29, 2016 - Sidney Yellow Jacket Football takes on the Piqua Indians Thursday, September 29 for a special "Thursday Night Lights" game. Kicking off at 7:00pm at Sidney Memorial Stadium, the rivalry will be broadcast live on television thanks to Fox 45.

The Sidney High Student Government will host the annual homecoming activities and dance with Ancient Greece as the theme and green, gold, and white as the colors. Activities begin Wednesday, September 28, with the homecoming parade and bonfire. A pep assembly will take place Thursday, September 29, during school for all SHS students. Thursday evening, Sidney takes on Piqua for the homecoming game. The crowning ceremony will begin at 6:15PM with the introduction of court members. Kickoff is at 7PM. The game will be televised on the local Fox digital station and then rebroadcast on Sunday, October 2, at noon on ABC. The annual Power Puff game will be part of homecoming festivities this year, taking place Friday, September 30. Homecoming activities will conclude with the dance, which takes place Saturday, October 1, from 8-11PM in the SHS gymnasium.

SMS Raises Funds for Cystic Fibrosis SMS 6th grade students collect dimes for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of their classmate Luke Bemus.

April 11, 2016 - Sixth grade students and staff at Sidney Middle School have started a “Dimes for Luke” fundraising campaign to raise money for the Great Strides Walk to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. They’re doing this in honor of their classmate and friend, Luke Bemus, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe.

SHS Homecoming in “Hollywood” SHS Homecoming in “Hollywood”

Roll out the red carpet as the Sidney High Student Government hosts the annual homecoming dance with a Hollywood theme Saturday, October 3.

Homecoming festivities will kick off with a pep rally on Friday, October 2 during the school day. The homecoming parade will take place beginning at 6pm on Friday, leaving from the Shelby County Fairgrounds, heading north on Highland Avenue and west on Campbell Road, and ending at the Sidney Memorial Stadium. Homecoming court will be introduced at 6:20pm, with the announcing of kind and queen at approximately 6:30pm. Sidney football will face off against Trotwood Madison at 7pm. The homecoming dance will take place from 8-11pm at Sidney High School on Saturday, October 3.

C-SPAN to Honor Winning SHS Students in StudentCam Competition C-SPAN to Honor Winning SHS Students in StudentCam Competition

WASHINGTON (May 22, 2015) – C-SPAN’s award-winning, 45-foot customized bus will visit Sidney High School on Tuesday, June 2  to honor local winners for C-SPAN’s annual student video documentary competition, StudentCam. During the visit, a C-SPAN Representative will present a StudentCam certificate of merit to Courtney Phelps, Peyton Jones, Nick Climer & Nathan Bemus during an award ceremony in front of classmates, teachers, family members and elected officials to recognize their achievement in the national competition. The winning video will also be viewed during the congratulatory event.

Emerson Elementary Plant Sale Fundraiser Emerson Flower Sale

April 15, 2015 - Emerson Elementary and the Emerson PTO will be hosting a plant sale fundraiser Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Emerson Elementary.

Students will be selling presale tickets. Those who purchase presale tickets will have the opportunity to shop early from 9am-10am. Starting at 10am, the sale opens up for general public sales – cash, check and tickets from student presale will be accepted. The plants are provided by Strader’s Greenhouse out of Grove City, who has always supplied the plants for the Emerson’s plant sale. The sale will run through the afternoon until all of the plants are sold.

SHS Bomb Threat Update

UPDATE: A ninth grade student at Sidney High School has confessed to making the bomb threat at Sidney High School. Scribbled on a bathroom stall in a boy’s restroom were the words, “I hate school and am going to blow it up February 11 at 9:00am.” Sidney High School Administration was made aware of the threat late in the morning on Monday, February 9.

The student has been charged with a Felony 2, Inducing Panic. In addition, he has been suspended for ten days, with recommendation for expulsion. He is currently being held at West Central Juvenile Detention Center in Troy, Ohio.

SHS Bomb Threat

Monday morning, a bomb threat was found on the restroom stall of a boys’ restroom at SHS.

Sidney City Schools, Sidney Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff Department have been proactive with this troubling situation and have recommended the following actions for Sidney High School students:

  • SHS students will enter Sidney High School at 7am only (no exceptions) through two areas of entrance – the center sliding doors on the north side of the building by the flagpole, and the auditorium doors on the east side of the building.
  • Book bags will not be permitted in school.
  • There will be no hall passes awarded to restrict the hallway traffic and to maintain security during class time.
  • Winter coats are to be put in lockers.
  • Students with purses or other closed items will have those items searched before entering the school.
  • Students will be allowed to use an alternative bag if it is clear or see-through. (ie. Walmart/Kroger or any other clear shopping bag, etc)

Any information or leads with this intent of impending danger should contact Deputy Thompson, SHS School Security Officer, at 937-497-2238. A $1,000 reward, paid for by the Shelby County Sheriff ($500) and Shelby County Crime Stoppers ($500) is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for this bomb threat.

Agape Food Drive SHS Food Drive for Agape - April 2018

April 20, 2018 -Earlier this month, Agape Distribution was vandalized again. The non-profit organization provides food and other items for economically disadvantaged families in our community. Sidney City Schools was asked to participate in a food drive to help stock the store and offset food costs so repairs could be made and the organization could use funds for security cameras.

SHS AIR Retake Schedule - December 4-8 AIR Retake Information

Sidney High School will have a two-hour delay each day during the week of December 4-8 for the purpose of AIR retakes. The retakes will be for sophomores, juniors, and seniors in need of improving their previous AIR scores. Students in need of retaking the AIR tests will report to school at the normal time. Students who do not need to retake any AIR tests will report on a 2-hour delay.

NOTICE: The Sidney City Schools receives federal Special Education IDEA Part B funds to assist with the education of handicapped children ages 3 through 21. Community members who would like to have input into the planning for the use of the federal funds are welcome to provide comment during our public hearing on Monday, July 17, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. in the Board of Education building community room.

Sidney Athletics to Host Recruitment Seminar

February 25, 2016 - A seminar to prepare parents and athletes for the recruiting road ahead -- complete with all its bumps -- will be hosted by the Sidney Athletic Department on Wednesday, March 16 at Sidney High School in the gymnasium beginning at 7:30pm. “Guiding the College-Bound Athlete” will provide information and topics for every student-athlete in middle and high school and their parents to educate and prepare them for opportunities and careers after graduation. Many student-athletes who aspire to play at the college level are not familiar with the ins and outs of academic requirements and eligibility, as they need to be in order to pursue their goals.

29th Annual Sensational Sounds Band Festival Sensational Sounds

September 1, 2015 – Seven area marching bands will take the field at Sidney Memorial Stadium on Saturday, September 12 at 7:00pm as Sidney High School hosts the 29th annual Sensational Sounds Band Festival. Performing bands include Covington, Riverside, Miami East, Triad, and St. Henry. The featured band is the Otterbein University Marching Band.

SHS Library Seeking Community's Votes Follett Challenge

Morgan Nickolai, the Sidney High School Library Media Specialist, has entered a $200,000 national education contest hoping for a chance at one of the 13 prizes that will be awarded to recognize the best in K-12 innovation. In addition to completing an online application for the fourth annual Follett Challenge, Nickolai also submitted a short video to promote The Workforce Academy Program that teaches students the 21st century skills they need to be prepared for life.

Brightening the Climate at Opportunity School New Opportunity School Office and Conference Room

The Shelby County – Sidney City Opportunity School recently renovated the office at Sidney High School. This area has served as a hub for students, parents, faculty and administration since 2008. The staff was faced with the dilemma to either upgrade or invest in new construction in order to bring the facility into the 21st Century. Priorities were established, a cost analysis was conducted, and a decision made by the staff to proceed using an architectural sketch designed by Greg Johnson and Hilary Davis (Opportunity School team members).

SHS Academia Gearing Up for Nationals

May 18, 2017 - The Sidney HS Academia team will be competing at high school quizbowl nationals, the National Scholastic Championship (NSC), on June 10th and 11th in Chicago at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. Sidney quizbowlers will compete against more than 90 other high school teams from around the country and the world. Last year, Sidney tied for 38th.

The Sidney Academia team is composed of senior NourEddine Hijazi, senior Andrew Mitchell, sophomore Oliver Marchus, and freshman Whitney Petty, and is is coached by Brett Bickel.

SHS Compiling State Athletic List

February 10, 2017 - Sidney High School Athletic Director Mitch Hoying is in the midst of a project to give recognition to athletes who either competed in state meets and tournaments, or earned all-state honors, and he wants the public’s help.

The goal is to compile and display a list of every athlete in Sidney High school history that earned all-state recognition or participated in a state meet.

Fans of all ages will delight as Dorothy and friends “follow the yellow brick road” to find the Wizard who can help her return home. With flying monkeys, familiar songs, and whimsical munchkins, The Wizard of Oz will entertain the entire family.

Humble officially took over on Aug. 1. “It’s been fantastic so far,” said Humble. “I love the folks here — the students, staff and community members. I’ve been getting to know the kids. I’ve been really busy, but I like being busy.”

SHS AIR Test/Delay Schedule

SHS will have its second round of State tests the week of April 23. Algebra and Geometry part I will be on Monday, April 23, with part II for Algebra and Geometry on Tuesday, April 24. Monday will be on a one-hour delay schedule with classes starting for all students at 8:30am. Tuesday will be on a two-hour delay with classes for all students starting at 9:30am. American History and American Government tests will be given on Wednesday, April 25. The Biology test will be given on Thursday, April 26. On both Wednesday and Thursday, SHS will operate on a two-hour delay schedule with classes for all students starting at 9:30am.

 

Transportation will be running at the regular time. Students who need to ride the bus and don't have to test will need to report to the gym.

March 22, 2017 - Sidney head cross country coach Ken Kellner is putting on the Jackets in Training running program for Sidney students in grades 3-6 on Mondays and Wednesdays in April (April 3, 5,10,12, 19, 24, 26) from 4:30-5:30PM in front of Sidney High School. Students interested in this program can get a signup form from their school; return forms to school offices by March 29.

Mayor Talks Politics with Students at SHS Mayor Visits SHS 2018

April 16, 2018 - American Government students at Sidney High School enjoyed a visit from Sidney’s Mayor, Mike Barhorst recently. As a guest speaker in several classes, he spent the day discussing his journey into public service, offering details on some of the current projects going on within the city, and answering a myriad of questions generated by the students.

“The mayor has been graciously accepting our invitations to speak with students for the past few years, and he always does a fantastic job sharing the ins-and-outs of serving as a City Council member,” says teacher James Whitman.

SHS Career Day - April 6 Career Fair 2017

March 22, 2017 - Sidney High School CBIP (Career Based Intervention Club), Workforce Partnership and Upper Valley Career Center will be hosting a Career Fair and Signing Day Thursday, April 6, in the Sidney High School gymnasium from 9:00am-2:00pm.

More than 500 Sidney High School students attended last year to learn about local corporations and career opportunities, as well as college and military paths.

Emerson Plant and Craft & Vendor Sale

April 25, 2016 - MARK YOUR CALENDAR! The Emerson Elementary PTO will be hosting a plant sale and craft & vendor fair on Saturday, May 7, 2016.

The plant sale will take place from 10am-3pm, or until sold out. There will be a variety of hanging baskets, planters of different sizes, flats of annuals, and a variety of vegetables. The craft & vendor fair will 9am-2pm. There will be vendors of all sorts, raffle baskets, and a 50/50 drawing. Admission is $2 per adult, children admitted free.

The Sidney Athletic Booster Group announced it will host the 6th annual Sting 5K on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at 9:00AM. Registration will begin at 7:30AM. This year, the Sting 5K will be held on the Sidney athletic campus, beginning and ending at the Sidney Memorial Stadium. The race is open to both runners and walkers. All proceeds will benefit the Sidney Athletic Booster Group.

April 20, 2018 - Sidney High School CBIP in conjunction with the Upper Valley Career Center will host the annual College and Career Fair on Thursday, May 3. Each year local businesses, organizations, colleges/universities, and military groups speak with more than 700 students about their institutions and share more about career opportunities. Businesses and colleges are encouraged to reserve their space. The fair will run from 10:00am-3:00pm and is open to the public from 3-5:30pm.

ACT for All Juniors

March 1, 2017 - This spring, schools across Ohio will be participating in a state mandated opportunity for all juniors to take the ACT exam at no cost to parents or students. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) established a limited number of dates to administer the exam; Sidney High School will administer the exam to all juniors, including UVCC students, at Sidney High School on Tuesday, March 21, 2017. 

During the administration of the test, Sidney High School must operate under ACT guidelines: a four-hour uninterrupted time period, a quiet environment (no bells or hall traffic), a limit on students per square foot (25 in a classroom, max), etc. 

As a result, regular academics at Sidney High School will be suspended on Tuesday, March 21; instead, each grade level will participate in different learning/testing activities. These activities will wrap up around noon, at which time students who walk or have a ride home are free to leave for the day. The district is not changing the bus schedule, so if a student depends on bus transportation, they must remain on campus until 2:30pm and will be supervised by school personnel.

SHS to hold Goodwill Drive to Victory September 8-11 Drive to Victory

September 1, 2015 – Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley and Channel 7 WHIO-TV have teamed up to challenge two local high schools to battle off the field in a donation drive benefiting as part of the Goodwill Stores 2012 Drive to Victory. Sidney High School will go head-to-head with Miamisburg in this friendly and charitable competition off the field September 8-11.

May 4, 2015 - Sidney Girls Volleyball announced the Sidney Volleyball Camp for all girls who will be entering grades 3-8 in the fall. The camp will take place June 8-11, 2015, from 5:00PM - 6:30PM for those entering grades 3-5, and 7:00PM - 8:30PM for those entering grades 6-8 in the Sidney Middle School gymnasium.

Coach Kevin Fell To Return For 1989 Anniversary

Plans are now finalized for the public program to celebrate the silver anniversary of the 1989 Sidney Yellow Jackets journey to the state football semi-finals. On Sunday November 9 at 2pm in the SHS auditorium, the Sidney City Schools, Shelby County Historical Society, and host Dave Ross will present "Sidney Football 1989...A November To Remember."

November 19, 2015 - In the spirit of the season, Sidney High School students and staff will beholding a toy drive at the school now through December 12, with all toys being donated to the Salvation Army on December 14. While this toy drive is to encourage generosity and good will among our students and staff, we would like to welcome the community to participate. Members of the community can donate toys during school hours (7:30am-3pm) Monday through Friday in the main office of Sidney High School. For those who are unable to stop at SHS during the school day, barrels will be available at the boys and girls basketball games on December 12. This is our time to give back to the youth in our community, please consider joining us!

April 22, 2015 - Sidney Girls Basketball Coach Megan Mummey announced the Sidney Girls Basketball Camp for girls who will be entering grades 5-8 in the fall.

The camp will take place June 2nd and 3rd from 2-4pm in the Sidney High School gymnasium. The cost of the camp is $25 per student.

Jackets In Training Running Program

March 9, 2015 - Sidney Cross Country Coach Ken Kellner is proud to announce the Jackets in Training running program for 2015. This free program is designed to engage kids in grades 3-6 in the excitement of running. Developing correct muscle memory at an early age creates significant advantages for those athletes. Each practice, they will participate in running games, drills and conditioning that will work to develop the fundamentals of running, endurance, and a professional running technique. Jackets in Training will take place from 4:00-5:00pm Mondays and Wednesday from March 23 through April 29, 2015 in front of Sidney High School. Registration is required.

December 16, 2017 - Four new inductees were selected to the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor this week and will be enshrined on Friday evening April 20, 2018 in the Sidney High School auditorium beginning at 7pm. The public is invited to attend this 25th annual event and the reception that follows in the adjacent gymnasium. The Hall will have 127 members with these additions.

Students in the SHS multiple disabilities classrooms now have a wonderful sensory room to enjoy. The Lowe’s team came in recently and finished the sensory room, which they worked on this summer.

Mani Wins Emerson Spelling Bee Emerson Elementary Spelling Bee Participants - 2017

November 17, 2017 - Emerson Elementary held their spelling bee on November 16, 2017. 23 students in third and fourth grades, as well as fifth-grade students from Sidney Middle School, participated in the bee, which went 14 rounds. Fifth-grade student Arshia Man, daughter of Ardash and Pooja Mani, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘practically.’ Fourth-grade student Keaton Shaffer, son of Andrew and Amy Shaffer, was the runner-up. Jill Hanke, instructional support specialist, was the pronouncer. SMS Principal Diane Voress, retired teacher Becky Hewitt, and Superintendent John Scheu were the judges.

With our first benchmark period complete for NWEA MAP Growth, grades K-10, our district is realizing the wealth of information we can access and share with parents. On March 14, students at Sidney Middle School in grades 5 through 8 placed a personalized message of HOPE to STOP VIOLENCE on construction paper links. The messages were linked together to symbolize all our hopes coming together to stop the violence.

Record-Breaking Year for United Way Campaign

November 15, 2017 - Sidney City Schools had a record-breaking year of giving to the Shelby County United Way with a campaign total of $42,255 for the entire district. Employees of the Sidney City School District made generous gifts and pledges totaling $38,633. Students donated $891. The Turf’s Up scrimmage event Sidney Athletics hosts in conjunction with the Shelby County United Way brought in $2,731 this year.

SMS Academic Awards 2015 SMS Academic Awards

June 5, 2015 - Sidney Middle School recently held its academic awards programs for grades 5-8. The following students were honored for their academic achievements for the 2014-2015 school year. Awards were presented by principals Diane Voress, Kevin Boerger, and Michael Moore, as well as various classroom teachers. Honor roll awards were presented to students who achieved accordingly for all the first 3 nine-weeks grading periods. Perfect attendance students were entered in drawings for $50 cash prize incentives.

SHS College Credit Plus Students MUST Attend Orientation at Edison Edison Community College Logo

ALL students planning on taking part in the College Credit Plus program with Edison next year (no matter if you have participated in PSEOP/Dual Enrollment in prior years) will NEED to attend an orientation at Edison this summer in order to register for classes. Students will also need to take their Academic Advising forms signed by their counselor to orientation.

This is in effect for ALL students taking part in the program regardless of taking classes on the Edison Campus or at Sidney High, and regardless of raking class at Edison in prior years. Edison will NOT be coming to SHS to register the students in the fall.

Cox Wins SMS Geography Bee SMS Geography Bee Winner and Runner-Up

January 30, 2018 - Sidney Middle School sixth grade student Aidan Cox won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee held in January. Cox is now one step closer to winning a $25,000 college scholarship, the grand prize at the national competition to be held in Washington D.C. May 20-23, 2018. The runner-up in the competition was eighth-grader Cole Sibert, while Carter Nuss finished in third place.

After Prom Committee Thanks Community 2017 After Prom Minute-To-Win-It

May 3, 2017 - Sidney High School’s 2017 After Prom was held at Vandemark Farm on Saturday, April 29. This fun-filled event was hosted by the Junior/Senior Parent After Prom Committee. All of Vandemark Farm’s outdoor activities were open to the students (until the lightening hit) including the zip line, giant swing, putter golf and petting zoo. In addition to the many outdoor activities, indoors there was a photo booth, corn hole, life size jenga and the extremely popular and entertaining Minute-to-Win-It games. Over 125 prizes were given away throughout the evening. ALL of this was made possible by parent donations and MANY donations from community businesses and restaurants – either by cash, prizes, or food.

District Responds to ECOT Closure

January 29, 2018 - Students throughout Ohio were left in academic limbo after the online charter school Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow - ECOT - lost its sponsorship a little over a week ago and abruptly shut down. Affecting 40 Sidney students, the Sidney City School District’s administration has been reaching out to families to help them find a place for their child to finish out the school year – back in the classroom or online.

7th Annual Sting 5K

February 29, 2016 - The Sidney Athletic Booster Group announced it will host the 7th annual Sting 5K on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 9:00AM. Registration will begin at 7:30AM. This year, the Sting 5K will be held on the Sidney athletic campus, beginning and ending at the Sidney Memorial Stadium. The race is open to both runners and walkers. All proceeds will benefit the Sidney Athletic Booster Group. The Sting 5K will be the first race of the Shelby County 5K Tour.

Sidney City Schools Sets Kindergarten Registration & Screening

February 1, 2017 - Sidney City Schools kindergarten screening and registration for the 2017-2018 school year will be held April 3–7, 2017, at Connection Point Church, 1510 Campbell Road, Sidney. Children must be five years of age on or before August 1, 2017 to enroll in the Sidney City Schools kindergarten program.

Key Club & FCCLA Give Back to Wilson Health ER SHS Key Club and FCCLA donate children's toys and activity items to Wilson Health ER.

October 11, 2017 - The Sidney High School FCCLA and Key Club recently teamed up for a collection drive of children’s items for the Wilson Health ER. The groups reached out to their peers at school to help with this drive and successfully collected close to 150 items including stuffed animals, dolls, books, coloring books, crayons, stickers, cars, puzzles, games, and activity packs. These special items will be given to young patients by the nurses when they visit the emergency room.

Comeback Kid By Isaiah Bowser, SHS Senior

I believe in a comeback and the power of hard work. Growing up in multiple houses in Sidney, my mother had to work for every dollar to support my family. Often my sister and I would have to stay with my grandparents while my mother was working one of her two jobs or finishing her college. She taught me a lot about hard work. She gave me my work ethic.

Scheu Recognized as Defiance College Distinguished Alumni John Scheu receives Alumni Citation of Academic Excellence from Defiance College.

DEFIANCE, Ohio - Eight Defiance College alumni were recognized during homecoming festivities on Saturday, Oct. 15, for their accomplishments.

The Alumni Citation for Academic Excellence were presented to Judy Small Dally, Defiance, class of 1971 and 1994; and John Scheu, Sidney, class of 1972. Alumni Achievement Award recipients were Dale Bruskotter, Ottawa, class of 1974; and David Robinson, Alliance, class of 1976. Tim Leuzarder, deceased, class of 1967, was also honored with this award. Casey Gibson, Toledo, class of 2005 and 2010, received the Young Alumni Service Award.

December 18, 2017 - Longfellow Elementary held their spelling bee on December 15, 2017. 25 students in third, fourth, and fifth grade participated in the bee, which went nine rounds. Fourth grade student Lerato Cervantes, daughter of Moleboheng Moremi, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘neglected.’ Fourth grade student Noah Ludy, son of Cary Ludy, was the runner-up. Speech Pathologist Kristen Gehret was the pronouncer. Karen Adkins, Betty Cole and Lori Knupp were the judges.

I Believe in MH Kids By Taylor New, SHS Senior

I believe that my life has been impacted by working hand-in-hand with multi-handicapped kids. This past summer I volunteered for Camp Dalanda. Camp Dalanda is a camp dedicated to multi-handicapped kids. I was apprehensive at first because I didn’t know if I would be able to fulfill the needs of the campers. My nerves were put to rest after my camper, Noah, a 15-year-old boy who has Down Syndrome, arrived. Noah will always have a special place in my heart because he changed my life in so many ways.

Opportunity Knocks Career Camp - May 30 - June2

April 3, 2017 - Through a grant received by the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center the Opportunity Knocks Camp will be offered again this year. This day camp for Sidney City Schools current 8th and 9th graders offers career exploration in four areas; Automotive Tech, Electrical Trades, Electronics/Robotics, and Landscape Management. Held at the Upper Valley Career Center, Opportunity Knocks Camp is scheduled for May 30, 2017 through June 2, 2017.

December 18, 2017 - Northwood Elementary held their spelling bee on December 14, 2017. 26 students in third, fourth, and fifth grade participated in the bee, which went 10 rounds. Fourth grade student Keegan Conley, son of Matt and Dana Conley, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘affirmation.’ Fifth grade student Parker Slaven, son of Allen and Jennifer Slaven, was the first runner-up, with fifth grade student Alex Holbrook, son of Shane and Jennifer Holbrook, finishing as the second runner-up. Meggan Weaver, retired SCS Gifted and Talented Coordinator, was the pronouncer. Instructional Support Specialists Jill Hanke and Lindsay Geuy and Title I teacher Lori Billing were the judges. 

Burden First From SHS to Earn American FFA Degree Bradley Burden- American FFA Degree

Sidney High School alumnus Bradley Burden (SHS ’16), a member of the Sidney FFA chapter, was awarded the American FFA Degree at the 90th National FFA Convention & Expo on October 28, 2017, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He is the first recipient of the American Degree from Sidney High School since the agricultural education program was restarted five years ago.

December 14, 2017 - Sidney Middle School held their spelling bee on December 12, 2017. 23 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade participated in the bee, which went 22 rounds over 2 days. Eighth grade student Marco Orozco, son of Nazario and Serlene Orozco, won the bee by correctly spelling ‘electioneer.’ Eighth grade students Nathan Gailey, son of Richard and Angela Gailey, and Ava Westfall, daughter of James and Tanya Westfall, tied for first runner-up. Jill Hanke, Instructional Support Specialist, was the pronouncer. Principal Diane Voress, Assistant Principal Kevin Boerger, and library aide Valerie Schroer were the judges.

SMS celebrated Red Ribbon Week October 23 - 27. Students Caleigh Henline, Aleyce Freeman, Gunner Bryan, and Davin Meiring created a Red Ribbon Week banner. Their fellow peers throughout the school shared their KEYS to being drug-free. The theme of the week was “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug-Free!”

October 23, 2018 - SHS junior Megan Marlow and her teacher and ally, Mrs. Cheryl Clark recently attended a 3-day conference, Project STIR in Columbus, Ohio. STIR stands for Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility. Project STIR is a training program to promote a successful transition to the community for students with disabilities. During this conference Megan and Cheryl learned how to know yourself better, communicate assertively, and be responsible.

Cargill to Team Up With Ferguson Construction for 4th Grade Perfect Attendance Program

September 14, 2017 - Ferguson Construction has agreed to be the co-sponsor, along with Cargill, for the fourth grade perfect attendance program in Sidney City Schools. The partnership will ensure that any fourth grader who achieves perfect attendance for the school year will be rewarded with a new bike at the yearend assembly. 

Chris Herren Speaks to SHS Seniors Chris Herren speaks to SHS - March 2, 2017

March 7, 2017 - On March 2, 2017, Sidney High School welcomed Chris Herren, a basketball legend from Fall River, Massachusetts, dreamed of one day playing for his hometown team, the Boston Celtics. An All-American, Herren broke scoring records, was recruited by top colleges, featured in Sports Illustrated and became the focus of an acclaimed book Fall River Dreams. Herren realized his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA when he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in 1999 and was traded to the Boston Celtics after his rookie season, but lost it all due to substance abuse.

Alcohol and drug free since August 1, 2008, Herren has refocused his life to put his sobriety and family above all else. He shares his harrowing story of abuse and recovery in his memoir, Basketball Junkie, as well as in numerous interviews throughout the Emmy nominated ESPN Films documentary Unguarded, of which he is the subject.

Herren shared his story with students from Sidney High School, Lehman Catholic High School, Fairlawn High School, and Jackson Center High School in the hopes of reaching at least one person and making a difference in their life.

May 14, 2015 - Sidney High School recently held their Underclass Award programs to honor the academic successes of students. Students were honored for earning honors, high honors, and perfect attendance, as well as for their participation and achievements in a number of other academic activities.

New Choices Visits Longfellow Macey Grise of New Choices gives out books to Longfellow Kindergarteners.

Macey Grise of New Choices visited Longfellow as a part of their Kindness Day. She read the book Bullying is Bad to all students, which each student received a copy of. The activity was coordinated to go with New Choice's Domestic Violence Awareness Wear Purple Day. The philosophy of Amanda Partington and Macey Grise from New Choices is to teach kindness at a young age to prevent violence later.

May 24, 2017 - At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, Cargill Cares approached Sidney City Schools and proposed an idea to promote attendance – a free bike at the end of the school year to every fourth grader with perfect attendance. This week, the Cargill Cares team delivered nearly 30 bikes to the four Sidney elementary schools.

May 13, 2015 - The Sidney Education Association held their awards dinner last week at the Moose Lodge. The evening, filled with laughter and tears, celebrated various teachers for accomplishments and achievements throughout the year. Members honored Julie Henman, 5th grade teacher at Northwood Elementary, with Teacher of the Year. The group also recognized Sylvia Chirakos-Dorsey & Joan Roberts-Swank with the Career Achievement Award. Doer Awards and Friends of Education Awards were also given out.

April 13, 2015 – Sidney High School's Career Based Intervention Senior Knowledge Bowl Team traveled to Dayton on Wed., March 25, 2015, to participate in the regional competition held at the Job Center.

The team members Danagio Core, Captain Molly Case, James Castle, Kelsey Beam, and Alexis Goodwin, and their coach, Mary Ellen Buechter, were impressed with their opponents and the quality of the teams. After a three hour intense competition, the team celebrated a third place victory.

Elementary Night Sees 650+ Elementary Students Cheering on the Jackets Cheerleaders

September 26, 2017 - Sidney City Schools hosted the third annual Elementary Night at last Friday night's football game. Approximately 650 elementary students participated in the event. Students and their families could attend the varsity football game for $2 a person, and students participating received a t-shirt. The students were ushered out onto the football field to form a tunnel for the Yellow Jackets to run through; they then got to stand among the football players as the Pride of Sidney Marching Band and the Sidney High School Alumni Band jointly played the National Anthem. 

Parking Enforcement Sidney City Schools Athletic Facilities Parking Map

Sidney City Schools is asking patrons of sporting and other events outside of the school day to not park vehicles in unauthorized areas of the Sidney City Schools campus. These areas include fire lanes, grass areas, and any area blocking a school entrance or loading dock. These rules protect our facilities that are in part maintained by your tax dollars, as well as prevent damage to your vehicle and not block other patrons. The district has spent much time and many resources repairing damaged areas where people have parked in the grass; additionally the ruts often created create safety hazards for students and patrons walking in the grass, as well as our maintenance crews when they are mowing.

Handicap parking is available and should you need special access parking, please contact the Athletic Department. 

The district will begin to enforce this with warning tickets, followed by actual tickets and towing. Please follow all signage and only park in authorized areas.

SEED Creates Sustainable City SEED model sustainable city

May 19, 2017 - The SEED class, a mixture of traditional day school students from Sidney High School and Opportunity School students, presented their model city this week. This unique STEM-based class exposes students to science, engineering, and design through the creation of a sustainable city. The group spoke about economic, environmental, and social sustainability. Their model city, made up of 3-D printed buildings, was meant to mimic Sidney.

SMS Offers After School Tutoring Program T3 Tutoring at SMS

February 22, 2017 – Sidney Middle School has started their T3 tutoring program for the third and fourth quarters of the school year. Open to all 5-8th grade Sidney Middle School students, T3 provides the opportunity for tutoring and homework help on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm in Computer Lab 303.

Sidney City Schools is announcing a new parent teacher conference schedule for the 2014-2015 school year. The district will be running one day of afternoon/evening conferences, followed by a 1/2 day of morning conferences. This second day of conferences students will not have school.

May 18, 2017 - Sidney High School, in cooperation with the Upper Valley Career Center, sent four students to the Business Professionals of America (BPA) National Leadership Conference and Competition in Orlando, Florida in early May. 

To qualify for the BPA National Leadership Conference, Joseph Douglas (junior), NourEddine Hijazi (senior), Anthony Mitchell (senior) and Elliot Wilson (senior) had to place in the top five at the State Leadership Conference or top ten in the nation in the virtual events.

May 11, 2015 - Longfellow Elementary families were recently treated to a “Sneak Peek at Summer Fun” family night. The evening featured games and activities presented by local organizations, all meant to encourage family involvement with the school and allow students the opportunity to learn about summer activities throughout Sidney and Shelby County.

SHS Alumni Scholarship Fund Notified of $20,000 Matching Gift The Community Foundation of Shelby County Logo

The Sidney High School Alumni Scholarship Fund has a unique opportunity to receive a $20,000 gift from an anonymous donor. The catch – the gift will match, dollar for dollar, each new contribution up to $20,000 made to the scholarship fund by the end of 2014. The scholarship fund has the potential to grow by $40,000.

September 20, 2017 - The Sidney Rotary Club and the Midwest Regional Education Service Center (MRESC) have partnered to create an awards program honoring classroom teachers serving the students of Shelby County.

Whittier kindergarten students in Ms. Nikki Inman’s class have been discussing professions and careers. Each student had to choose a profession they wanted to do when they grew up. Selections ranged from teacher, fireman, and policeman to military, nurse, doctor and dentist. Students then wrote letters to people in those professions. Those people then wrote letters back. Some of the professionals sent extra goodies with their letters, like toothbrushes or stickers. Carson Fryman uniquely decided he wanted to be a wildlife photographer and received something unique in return.

April 24, 2015 - Whittier Elementary was honored to be chosen as the site for the City of Sidney’s Arbor Day tree this year. This tree, a buckeye, has been dedicated to Whittier volunteer Larry McLaughlin.

Whittier Elementary PTO recently sponsored the visit of author and illustrator Laurie Knowlton as a part of the school’s Right to Read Week.

Knowlton, author of Why Cowboys Sleep With Their Boots On, talked with students about the elements of a story – to come up with a story, one needs first and foremost an imagination, followed by a main character, sub characters, a setting, a plot involving a problem that needs to be solved, and character growth. Knowlton used her book Pirates Don’t Say Please! to help demonstrate these elements.

Zhou Finishes 2nd in City-Wide Spelling Bee City Wide Spelling Bee

The Sidney City-Wide Spelling Bee took place Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 7pm in the Sidney Middle School auditeria. Fifteen spellers from Christian Academy School, Emerson Elementary, Holy Angels School, Longfellow Elementary, Northwood Elementary, Sidney Middle School, and Whittier Elementary competed for the honor of representing Sidney at the Regional Spelling Bee in Lima in March.

 

Northwood Student Council Celebrates Cancer Awareness. Northwood aide Wince Morris and principal Eric Barr get blasted with water balloons by 5th grade students - a prize for the class from each grade that raised the most money to benefit Shelby County Relay for Life.

Northwood Elementary Student Council sponsored a cancer awareness spirit week last week, with each day highlighting a different type of cancer. Students sold tickets for raffle baskets with items donated by staff and generous area businesses. The students also participated in a money war, with the winning class from each grade getting to throw water balloons at various staff members. The entire school also took part in a cancer awareness walk.

Thirty-three members of the Sidney High School orchestra experienced the big city life during their trip to New York City April 9-12.

Students were able to receive a world-class instructional clinic from New York Philharmonic assistant conductor Michael Adelson. The students were then able to apply his suggestions and comments through musicianship for a performance in the middle of Madison Square Atrium for New Yorkers during the busy lunch hour.

March 16, 2015 – Eight Sidney High School students from the Computer Information Systems class competed at the Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference. Six of the eight students placed in the top ten, with one of the students coming in second, and three others coming in first.

The evening, filled with laughter and tears, celebrated various teachers for accomplishments and achievements throughout the year, as well as those from the community who have positively impacted the education of Sidney City Schools students.

Changes to Golden Jacket Athletic Pass

April 14, 2015 - Sidney City Schools will continue to offer free, general admission into home Sidney Yellow Jacket games for all Sidney residents 62 years of age and older with the Sidney Golden Jacket Pass.

The Golden Jacket Pass is changing for the 2015-2016 school year. The district will be converting to a new style of pass beginning with the 2015 Fall Athletic Season. Current passholders will be required to exchange their old pass for a new one.

Notes were found in the restrooms at SHS....however, this time the notes were positive. The SHS SADD Chapter placed inspirational notes like "You're beautiful," "Stay strong," and "Do good" on the mirrors in the girls restrooms. Many students expressed how reading the notes made them feel good.

Sidney Earns All-Sports Trophy in GWOC North

March 6, 2015 - Sidney High School athletic director Mitch Hoying is feeling quite proud these days, and it’s the coaches and athletes at the school making him feel that way.

The Greater Western Ohio Conference announced recently that Sidney has won the GWOC North All-Sports Trophy for the winter season, and Hoying said it’s no small accomplishment for the Yellow Jacket athletes.

A recent legislative change has impacted testing for our 3rd grade students. All 3rd grade students will now take the OAA Reading test this Spring, not the new state test for English Language Arts. This change is ONLY for Reading.

April 7, 2015 – On March 14, Sidney Middle School Science Teacher Leslie Phlipot presented at the National Science Teachers’ Association Annual Conference in Chicago, Ill.

Phlipot’s presentation, “Game Themed Instruction on a Budget,” centered on developing content and making the information more accessible to students. Phlipot’s process uses hands-on manipulatives that allow students to work together to develop skills and learn valuable content.

March 2, 2015 - Sidney High School senior Jared Tangeman is the 2015 recipient of the Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award.

The Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Award was established by the Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) to promote and recognizes outstanding academic achievement. This event honors each Ohio county’s best and brightest student. Each district high school nominates a student for this award; each county then choses a winner.

Tangeman is currently ranked second in his class and maintains a grade point average of 4.2. Throughout high school, he has immersed himself in rigorous coursework including nine Advanced Placement classes. His hard work and dedication have paid off as Tangeman has earned all A’s throughout his entire high school career.

School Board Seats Open for Election for 2018

May 5, 2017 - At the May 1, 2017 Board Meeting, current board members Bill Ankney and Paul Heins announced they would not be seeking reelection for their school board seats, leaving two openings beginning in 2018. 

A candidate for the board of education in a city with a population of between 20,000 and 49,999 (Sidney falls in this range) must have 75 signatures on his or her petition of candidacy. The filing fee for candidates is $30, and the deadline is Wednesday, August 9, 2017. Petition forms can be obtained from the Shelby County Board of Elections or through the Ohio Secretary of State's website.

Zhou Qualifies for State Geography Bee Zhou Qualifies for State Geography Bee

March 5, 2015 - Sidney Middle School seventh grader Nobel Zhou has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the 100 semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2015 Ohio National Geographic State Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The contest will be held at the Ohio Dominican University, 1216 Sunbury Road in Columbus on Friday, March 27, 2015.

On Monday, December 15, the Sidney City Schools Board of Education approved four 2-hour early releases for all K-12 students to take place during the remainder of this school year.

March 5, 2015 - C-SPAN recently announced the winners of the national 2015 StudentCam documentary competition. 150 student and 53 teacher prizes, totaling $100,000 in cash prizes, will be awarded for winning documentaries.

Sidney High School students worked together in groups of two to create their videos, which also fulfilled a class assignment. Two groups of seniors from Sidney High School won Honorable Mention – “Public Assistance in Sidney, OH” by Nick Climer and Nathan Bemus, and “Gun Safety in Schools” by Peyton Jones and Courtney Phelps. 

SHS 1-Hour Early Release Continuation

On December 15, 2014, the board of education approved the continuation of the Thursday 1-hour early release schedule for Sidney High School. The board also approved four additional 2-hour early releases district-wide. SHS students will dismiss 2 hours early like all students district-wide on these specific dates.

The Little Brown Jug Celebrates 60 Years The Little Brown Jug Celebrates 60 Years

The "Little Brown Jug" between the football squads of Sidney and Greenville High Schools has been contested since 1956 except for periods where the two weren't in the same league and/or the artifact had become lost when misplaced for three decades. The jug currently resides in Greenville which won the 2015 renewal. The 2016 rematch will conclude the season on Friday, October 28, at Sidney Memorial Stadium.

September 13, 2015 - Sidney offensive lineman Lorenzo Taborn (6'4" 317) has been selected to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa (home of the NFL Buccs) on Saturday January 9, 2016. This game features top senior football recruits from 39 states who competed in high school combines across the country. There is a cost associated with playing, so the Sidney Vespa Club is stepping up to contribute towards the $3,200 participation fee, as well as working to find others willing to help make Taborn's participation in the incredible opportunity a reality. 

SHS Wins District Mock Trial Competition

The Sidney High School Mock Trial continued its winning ways on Friday, January 30, 2015 by advancing to regional competition. “More than 400 teams compete at the District level and only about 1 in 3 teams advance to regional competition. The Montgomery County District is very competitive and we are very pleased with our team’s performance” remarked Advisor Brett Bickel. Montgomery County hosted the District competition with 20 teams. Teams from Centerville, Chaminade Julienne, Marysville, and Northmont also advanced.

Students and staff at Sidney Middle School are working together in an effort to spread some holiday cheer around the area. A drive for food items like canned goods and other holiday fare was held at the school over the past two weeks.

Students worked to fill and decorate each box with food for a holiday meal. Each box will then be delivered to local families in need so they can have a meal for the holiday season. The school has more than 40 boxes prepared to be delivered to local families.

April 10, 2017 - Sidney High School recently had several students compete at state competition for Business Professionals of America, a student organization that allows students from all over the nation to enhance their skills and compete in areas such as administration, programming, marketing, design and processing tools. SHS had four students qualify to continue on to the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Four to Join Sidney Schools Hall of Honor

Four new inductees were elected to the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor this week and will be enshrined on Friday evening April 17, 2015 in the Sidney High School auditorium. The public is invited to attend this 22nd annual event and the reception that follows in the adjacent gymnasium. The Hall will have 115 members with these additions. 2015 inductees include: W. Todd Bassett, Donald Manning (SHS 1933), Ken Monnier (SHS 1977), and Todd Taylor (SHS 1990).

April 6, 2017 - Mayor Mike Barhorst accepted an invitation to speak with government students at Sidney High School in March.  American Government classes had been learning about local government and invited the mayor for a visit to address their questions about projects and issues in Sidney.  

Teacher Jamie Whitman explained, "Our students were curious about the details of construction projects, specific zoning laws, and wanted updates on topics like the Wagner Building demolition. We decided to invite Mayor Barhorst to speak to our students, and he ended up teaching students the entire day."

The Whittier Elementary Spelling Bee, held on Friday, December 12, 2014 ended after nine rounds with fifth grader Nathan Gailey spelling “permission” and “carriage” to win. The bee continued to determine runner-up, which went to fourth grader Ryleigh Wagner-Topp who spelled “mugwump” correctly.

Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) recently announced the names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 60th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors from throughout the United States have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring. Jack Martin, Sidney High School senior was among those named as a Semifinalist in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program, and the only student in the greater Shelby County area to earn the honor

April 3, 2017 - Sidney Middle School staff recently served students their lunches after cash votes determined which staff would serve. Organized by the SMS Student Council, this fundraiser raised over $700 to benefit Karris Flory, daughter of James Flory, who was diagnosed with cancer and has been receiving chemo and radiation. The money will benefit her family for her medical bills. Teachers serving lunches were: Deputy Rick Cron, Jamie Barnes, Sherry Guinther, Ann Huffman, Laurie Jordan, Leslie Phlipot, Seth Meyer, Tracy Nuss, Jim Roby, Renee Davis, Bill Rippey, and Erica Scully. Leslie Phlipot and Nish Golden are the SMS Student Council advisors.

September 23, 2016 - Much of the equipment football players use is plenty visible, like helmets and shoulder pads. But there is one thing not so visible, but every bit as important — mouth guards. Sidney High School head football coach Adam Doenges, like others in his profession, wants only the best for his players, so he came up with an idea, one he says was "not original." When approached to donate towards mouth guards, MidWest Ohio Dental in Sidney stepped up in big way by fitting the 75-member program with custom fit mouth guards.

The Northwood Elementary Spelling Bee was held on December 5, 2014. The bee went nine rounds with fifth grade student Carter Nuss earning top honors by spelling “bandana” correctly. First runner-up was fifth grade student Carson Taylor and second runner-up was fifth grade student Mallory Godwin.

HOBY State Leadership Seminars provide youth with unique leadership training to equip them with the tools they need to make a positive change in their home, school, and community.

Quentin McKenzie and Adrianne Miller, residents of Sidney, Ohio, recently attended the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar held at Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio. McKenzie and Miller joined more than 208 other young high school leaders from the region. Representing Sidney High School, Quentin is the son of James McKenzie and Christine McKenzie, and Adrianne is the daughter of Chad and Fran Miller.

March 23, 2017 - Did you know Ohio biologists believe the nocturnal flying squirrel is perhaps more common in Ohio than the gray squirrel? Brunkner Nature Center recently visited Sidney Middle School to share this fact with students in Mr. Frank Hall's 5th grade science classes and talk aboutOhio animals. Students were able to feel the pelts of common Ohio mammals including a raccoon, coyote, fox squirrel, and bobcat. They also used a dichotomous key to study the features of animal skulls and determine which animal skull they had. Brunkner also shared some live animals including a possum and a flying squirrel. Students also participated in activities comparing themselves to the little brown bat.

Thomas Wins Longfellow Spelling Bee Kierstin Thomas and Cambry Cox

Longfellow Elementary School held its spelling bee on Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014 in the school gymnasium. It took 326 words and seventy-four rounds to find a champion. Fourth grader Kierstin Thomas correctly spelled fluency and pedestrian to be crowned this year’s champion. The runner-up trophy was awarded to fourth grader Cambry Cox.

Sidney Band and Choir Perform Well at OMEA Contests

March 13, 2017 - Four Sidney High School band and choir groups saw success at the OMEA (Ohio Music Educator Association) adjudicated large group contests March 3-4, 2017. At these events, ensembles from all over southwest Ohio perform for a panel of three distinguished music educators who give a rating to the ensemble based on their performance. The groups are also required to sight-read a piece they have never seen before to demonstrate music comprehension skills.

 

SHS TO HONOR STUDENTS IN NEW WAY

The Sidney City School board recently approved to change the procedure for selecting and recognizing their top-graduating students. Changing the distinction from Valedictorian to Summa Cum Laude allows us to honor those elite students and their diverse accomplishments. The decision to change was made with great care, and with all students in mind. Although, at first glance, this change looks like a big departure from tradition and our nearly 160-year history, the new procedure still honors our brightest students while adjusting to fit an ever-changing secondary educational landscape.

May 15, 2015 - Sidney City Schools bus driver Dennis Ahrens has been battling cancer the last two years. He's been able to keep working during treatment, but recently had to take some time off. While away, his Sidney Middle School and Sidney High School students made him posters to wish him well and let him know they were thinking of him. Emerson Elementary held their spelling bee on Tuesday, December 2nd. The bee ended after a nine-round intense competition between fifth graders Kayla Smith and Lilyan Maynard. Kayla Smith spelled “podunk” and "verve" to win the bee. Lilyan Maynard was the runner-up.

Workforce Academy Set to Start in 2014 Workforce Academy at SHS

Sidney City Schools’ most recent initiative has been their commitment to the business community’s Workforce Partnership of Shelby County. The district is pleased to announce the addition of the new Workforce Academy to the Sidney High School curriculum for the 2014-15 school year, with plans to have all tiers of courses added by the 2016-17 school year. The effort is for schools and industry to work together to build workforce training and 21st century skill development programs that will prepare students and employees for current and future local jobs.

Sidney High School will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate this new program and debut the state of the art classroom on Thursday, August 14 at 6:30PM in the lot behind the west wing of Sidney High School. Additionally, the Airstream mobile classroom will be on site for the public to view. This event and reception is open to the public.

Topalov Qualifies for Ohio National Geographic State Bee Topalov - Ohio National Geographic State Bee Qualifier

March 8, 2017 - SMS 8th grader Paul Topalov, son of Dr. Miguel and Michaela Topalov, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the Ohio National Geographic State Bee. Held on Friday, March 31, 2017.

This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 29th year. School Bees were held in schools with fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Dependents Schools and U.S. territories to compete in the State Bees.

May 18, 2015 - Students participating the Work Study Program at Sidney High School were honored at the 23rd annual Work Study Recognition Celebration on May 12, 2015 at Sidney High School. A total of 75 students participated in the program this year, giving them valuable work experience while also fulfilling their academic requirements.

SHS Academia Wins County Title for 7th Consecutive Year SHS Academia earns Shelby County title for 7th consecutive year.

Another successful year of academic competition recently ended in Shelby County with the announcement that Sidney High School has been named the 2014 Academia Champion. This is the seventh consecutive year that Sidney has won the competition and the 17th time they have served as champion since the inaugural season in 1975. Anna High School finished in second place with Botkins and Russia tied for third.

February 21, 2017 - Sidney High School senior Carly Drury has been honored  with a President’s Volunteer Service Award for her exemplary volunteer service.

The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. Sidney High School nominated Drury for national honors this fall in recognition of her volunteer service.

June 1, 2016 - Sidney Middle School recently held its academic awards programs for grades 5-8. Fifty percent of the entire student body was honored for their academic achievements for the 2015-2016 school year. Awards were presented by principals Diane Voress, Kevin Boerger, and Michael Moore, as well as various classroom teachers. Honor roll awards were presented to students who achieved accordingly for all the first 3 nine-weeks grading periods. Perfect attendance students were entered in drawings for $50 cash prize incentives. Student Council members acted as ushers.

Sidney High School Earns National AP Award

January 29, 2016 - Sidney High School was one of 425 school districts across the U.S. and Canada, 25 of which were from Ohio, to make the 6th Annual AP District Honor Roll — a list of districts being honored for increasing access to Advanced Placement course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that these districts are successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work.

June 1, 2015 - Sidney High School held its 144th commencement ceremony Saturday, May 30th at the Sidney Memorial Stadium, graduating 225 students.

Longfellow Elementary Principal Gets Lost In a Good Book Principal Dembski gets lost in a good book.

In recognition of National Young Readers Week Nov. 10-14, Principal Francine Dembski, Longfellow Elementary School, accepted the “Principal Challenge” of being a shining example for literacy and the Pizza Hut® BOOK IT!® Program by reading all day long, from the first bell to the last! The challenge is an annual event co-founded by Pizza Hut and the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.   

This year, Principal Dembski dressed in camo and spent the day “getting lost in a good book,” hiding out in various locations throughout the school and reading. Students spent the day ‘hunting’ for her, and when they spotted her, she was required to share a page or two with them.

Humphrey Honored for Volunteerism Humphrey Honored for Volunteerism

Lori Humphrey was presented with the Presidential Volunteer Service Award – Gold Level in honor of her service to all of Sidney City Schools with a concentration of the volunteer hours at Northwood Elementary. At the May meeting, her fellow Northwood Parent Teacher Organization members presented her with a certificate, lapel pin, and letter from President Barack Obama.

April 11, 2016 - Ross Casting and Innovation, LLC officials announced Friday, April 8, that a $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a Sidney High School graduating senior that participated in the RCI Academy as an elective in the 2015- 16 school year. Also announced, RCI will offer a Machine Shop position to a student that has attended the RCI Academy. RCI desires to provide job opportunities to graduates of the RCI Academy in skilled machining and technical positions. RCI will work with students to transition from job shadowing, to part time position, then a fulltime position after graduation in May 2016.

SMS Student Places at MathCounts Competition

May 27, 2015 - Sidney Middle School sixth grade student Nobel Zhou recently competed in the 2015 MathCounts Competition at the University of Dayton. Eighteen schools from the region participated at this event hosted by the Dayton Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, with 110 Mathletes competing for top individual and team honors. Statewide, more than 2,300 students take part in this competition.

SHS Wins $5,000 Century Link Foundation Grant for Innovative Technology

May 11, 2015 - Sidney High School Library and Media Specialist Morgan Nickolai was one of seven winners in the state of Ohio of the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program. The program, which has been offered since 2008, awards grants to schools in CenturyLink’s local service areas on behalf of teachers who have developed specific plans to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms. Nickolai was awarded $5,000 to purchase 3D printers and 3D scanners for classroom and library use.

Longfellow and Whittier Elementary Schools honored more than 50 veterans for Veteran's Day on Tuesday, November 11. Each school celebrated relatives of students and staff who have served or are currently serving our country in all of the various branches of military.

February 1, 2017 - Eighth grade student Paul Topalov was named the Sidney Middle School Geography Bee Champion. Sixth grade student Laina Hitchcock finished as runner up. 25 students in grades 5-8 at Sidney Middle School competed in the Geography Bee.

Jackets In Training Is Off to a Fast Start Jackets In Training 2016 One Miler Finish

April 7, 2016 - On Tuesday, April 5th, Sidney Cross Country Coach, Ken Kellner, kicked off the 6th annual Jackets In Training running program. 87 of the 110 young athletes in grades 3-6 who signed up were able to make the first session. All students ran a 1 mile time trail. Can't Stop Running supplied a finish line arch, music to "pump up" the runners, and a time clock at the finish so the racers could see how long it took them to run the mile.

May 25, 2015 - Sidney High School held their Senior Awards night on May 19th, at which the following awards and scholarship were presented in addition to the Honors Cords presented to those students earning Honors Diplomas and Academic High Honors.

The SHS Class of 2015, to date, has been awarded a one-year total of $390,705, with a potential four-year total of $1,166,196.

February 1, 2017 - Whittier Elementary 4th grade students recently learned about emergency preparedness through the Red Cross Pillowcase Project. This project, sponsored by Disney, teaches children about personal and family preparedness and safety skills, local hazards, and basic coping skills for emergency and disaster situations. Students received a sturdy pillowcase to decorate in which they could build their personal emergency supplies kit.

SHS German Classes Experience Iron Curtain "We are not free" - Berlin Wall Graffiti - German II Class

An iron curtain has descended across German class at Sidney High School! The German II classes are learning about the division of Berlin through a simulation of the events that ended with the fall of the wall 25 years ago on November 9th.  In the simulation, students were divided into East and West Berlin. Taped lines on the floor served as an imaginary border between the sectors of Berlin.

February 1, 2017 - Sidney High School is proud to announce Rachel Trudeau a state champion in the American Legion Americanism and Government Test. She has earned an all-expenses paid, week-long trip to historical Gettysburg, PA and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. The American Legion Department of Ohio sponsors the yearly trip, taking the top three boys and three girls in grades 10-12. 

Teacher and Three Alumni to Join Hall of Honor

Four new inductees were elected to the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor this week and will be enshrined on Friday evening April 21, 2017 in the Sidney High School auditorium beginning at 7:30pm. The public is invited to attend this 24th annual event and the reception that follows in the adjacent gymnasium. The Hall will have 123 members with these additions.

Chairman Devon Beer (SHS 1983) offered an overview of the selections, "The Hall of Honor committee is delighted with the 2017 induction class. From teaching to marketing to local building trades, these are four very different people who deserve this recognition. We are anxious for the Sidney schools community to learn about the great contributions these individuals have made in their vocations and home communities. These four emerged from a very strong field of candidates, many of whom could be elected in the future."

In an effort to recognize its past more, Sidney football is asking the community for help in identifying former Yellow Jacket alum that played collegiate football. These players need to be Sidney High graduates that went on to play at any level of college football for 4 years. SHS Students Honor Deb Mitchell by Raising Money for Animal Shelter SHS Students Raise Money in Honor of Late Aide

May 20, 2015 - Government students at Sidney High School paid tribute to the late SHS instructional aide, Deb Mitchell, by hosting a car wash on Saturday to raise money and awareness for the Shelby County Animal Shelter. All the proceeds, totaling just over $400, were donated to the Animal Shelter to help with the cost of caring for their ever-growing pet population.

Sidney High School senior Dean Fannon was among two hundred and thirty high school seniors to earn the Honda/OSU Math Medal Award from a partnership between Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. and The Ohio State University. The award recognizes the top senior mathematics student in 230 high schools in 31 counties in Central and Southwest Ohio.

November was National DECA Month SHS DECA members celebrate the finale of National DECA month (November) with Ugly Christmas Sweaters.

November was National DECA month, dedicated to celebration and recruitment of new members. SHS DECA had a fun and fabulous time promoting DECA with special events throughout the month of November. 

The Sidney High School DECA chapter has been in existence for over 20 years and is 40 members strong this year. DECA is an Association of Marketing Students and is an International program with over 275,000. The purpose of DECA is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

May 13, 2014 - Eighth grade students at Sidney Middle School, as well as students enrolled in the Workforce Academy courses at Sidney High School, recently attended the Career Exploration Academy at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. This event, sponsored by the Workforce Partnership of Shelby County and the Shelby County United Way, gave students the opportunity to visit with Shelby County employers to see what the workforce is like in the county.

The SHS Key Club went out for Trick-or-Treat last week, but they weren’t looking for candy. The group annually runs a can drive on Halloween in which they go door to door asking for donations. This year students collected more than 300 non-perishable food items which they donated to the Alpha Community Center food pantry.

SHS Alumna Stevie Shepherd Named NJCAA All-American Stevie Shepherd

Columbus State cross country runner Stevie Shepherd (Sidney/Sidney HS) was named a NJCAA all-American for her performance at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DIII Women’s Cross Country Championships. The meet was held on Sat, Nov. 12 at the Finger Lakes XC Course in Canandaigua, New York. Shepherd led the women to finish as national runner-up, the team’s best finish in program history.

March 21, 2016 - Whittier Elementary students were "Getting Piggy With It" this week during their Right To Read Week. To culminate their celebration of reading, students were able to vote for teachers to kiss a pig. To cast a ballot, students had to read for a certain length of time depending on their grade level.

On October 29th, the SHS SADD chapter hosted an assembly for freshmen girls and boys on the subject of teen dating violence and domestic abuse. Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) addresses the many issues teens face including bullying, texting and driving, suicide, violence, substance abuse, and more.

SADD members arranged for Gail Dafler of the Shelby County Counseling Center and Amanda Partington of New Choices to speak on the subject of teen dating abuse – physical, verbal, and emotional, as well as domestic abuse and violence. 

Straight A Fund Grant At Work

The Midwest Regional Educational Service Center is pleased to announce the awarding of a $1.1 million Straight A Grant from the state of Ohio. This grant entitled CAREER NETWORK provides a hands-on manufacturing curriculum, field experiences at Rhodes State College, and opportunities to earn a Basic Manufacturing Credential and a paid internship. All participating schools have partnered with Rhodes State Community College who will be providing the college-level content and assisting with updated curriculum and course progression. Participating schools in Shelby County include Anna, Botkins, Fairlawn, Russia, Sidney City, and the Sidney-Shelby County Opportunity school.

SMS Technology Classes Take Part in Hour of Code SMS Technology Classes Take Part in Hour of Code

Ms. Logan Morris' 6th grade technology classes at Sidney Middle School recently took part in the Hour of Code, a worldwide event that encourages people of all ages to participate in Code activities. Her students spent two days learning the basics of coding using the block method, which is the same idea as typing codes but easier to understand. When they finished their course they received a certificate for their participation.

Sidney High School had three State Champions in the American Legion Americanism and Government Test and have each earned an all-expense paid, week-long trip to historic Gettysburg, PA and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. The American Legion Department of Ohio sponsors the yearly trip taking the top 3 boys and 3 girls in grades 10-12. From Sidney, senior Alex Willman, son of Rhonda and Gordan Buchler, junior Logan  Schultz, daughter of Gary and Amy Schultz, and sophomore Ian Humphrey, son of Michael and Lori Humphrey, are three of the 18 winners selected from throughout Ohio at the state level.

March 29, 2016 - Fifth grade social studies students studied how the American Indians developed unique cultures with many different ways of life during the third quarter. The American Indian tribes and nations can be classified into groups based on geographic and cultural similarities. As students researched the ten regions in North America, they found information about the geography, shelter, transportation, clothing, cultural and art products, and foods of the various tribes and nations.

Sidney Students to Participate in All-State Children's Choir

Sidney City Schools will have seven students participating in the first-ever All-State Children’s Chorus this Saturday, October 18. The chorus consists of 116 students in grades 4-5 representing 36 music educators from all around the state of Ohio.

March 24, 2016 - Dr. Courtney Simons, Assistant Professor and Program Director of Food Science at Wright State University Lake Campus, recently visited the VoAg room at Sidney High School. Dr. Simons spoke with Food Science classes about education paths and careers in the field of Food Science Technology. The students also took part in a lab in which they used their taste buds to determine the sweetness of drinks from least sweet to most sweet - a subjective measure. They then used a machine to measure the percentage of sugar within the drinks to determine if their taste buds were correct - an objective measure.

March 14, 2016 - WDTN Channel 2 meteorologist Tara Hastings recently visited Northwood Elementary to speak to students about her job as a meteorologist! Northwood's first grade classes are currently doing a reading and science unit on weather! Tara shared about the instruments meteorologists use to help predict the weather, the difference between weather watches and warnings, what to do in the event of severe weather, and some fascinating weather related stories.

Four alumni will be honored including Rob Decker (SHS 1978), Marjorie Dunnavant (SHS 1954), Kathryn Lindsey (SHS 1967), and Charles Rhyan (SHS 1961).

Sidney City Schools Marketing Education students attended the DECA District 3 Fall Leadership was held at ONU in Ada, Ohio on Tuesday Oct. 7th. Along with Sidney, 13 other schools competed in 6 different contests: Parliamentary Law, Public Relations, Job Interview, Team Decision Making, Series Case Study, and Marketing Test. Sidney High School students school took 21 members, with seven of them earning top awards.

March 14, 2016 - Juniors and seniors at Sidney High School joined the National Honor Society during an induction ceremony and reception held March 13, 2016.

To qualify for National Honor Society, students must have a 3.5 grade point average or better, provide service and leadership in both the school and community and be honest, responsible, fair, courteous, tolerant and cooperative.

April 4, 2016 - Charles G. Rhyan was known as "Chuck" during his days in the Sidney City Schools (SHS 1961). More recently he's been known as "Charlie." When it came time to choose a profession, he knew he wanted to coach basketball, which would also entail being a teacher. Though his coaching & teaching didn't last all that long, they got him into the educational field where his level of achievement has propelled him into the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor, whose 23rd induction is set for Friday, April 15 at 7:30pm in the SHS auditorium. The annual event will be followed by a gymnasium reception, with both open to the public. Rhyan's 2016 classmates include fellow Sidney alums Rob Decker (1978), Marj Dunnavant (1954), and Kathy Lindsey (1967). This foursome will increase Hall membership to 119.

March 14, 2016 - The Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor is about to increase its membership to 119 with a 7:30pm induction in the Sidney High School Auditorium on Friday, April 15 that will be followed by a gymnasium reception, both of which are fully open to the public. The Hall of Honor is a mixture of alumni, retired employees, and supporters of the school district. Many of the alumni have excelled outside of the Sidney area while others stayed local to make a difference at home. Rob Decker (SHS 1978) has been successful in the amusement park industry, which obviously couldn't happen by remaining in Shelby County. On April 15 Rob will be joined by a trio of Sidney alumni in receiving the highest honor bestowed by the Sidney City Schools including Marj Dunnavant (1954), Kathy Lindsey (1967), and Charles G. Rhyan (1961).

March 21,2016 - Marjorie Blake graduated from Sidney High School in 1954 and was married two years later to classmate Tom Dunnavant. By 1963 their first child had entered kindergarten and Marj again became engaged with the Sidney City Schools in a new association that would span 40 years. The duration and quality of her service will result in her induction into the Sidney City Schools Hall of Honor in the SHS auditorium at 7:30pm on Friday, April 15. A gymnasium reception will follow with both events open to the public. Joining Marj Dunnavant in the class of 2016 are fellow alums Rob Decker (1978), Kathy Lindsey (1967), and Charles G. Rhyan (1961). This foursome will grow the Hall to 119 members.

Recognizing Coach Harlamert's 30+ Years of Coaching Honoring Coach Eric Harlamert

On Tuesday, Coach Eric 'Rug' Harlamert coached his final soccer game at the SHS soccer stadium. Prior to the game, we recognized and honored Eric and his more than 30 years of service to the SHS Boys Soccer program. Eric shared the evening with lifelong friends, colleagues, and mentors who have helped him become the outstanding teacher and coach he is, including Dave King, Clark Froening, Bob Forbeck, Maggi Williams, and David Lodge.

Victim Advocate and Humanitarian to Join Hall of Honor Kathy Lindsey

March 28, 2016 - The roots of Kathy Lindsey's service to humanity can be found at Sidney High School from where she graduated in 1967. During her senior year she wanted to support the children at St. Jude's Hospital and organized a walk to raise funds for that cause. Almost 50 years later she is set to receive the highest honor bestowed by the Sidney City Schools, induction into the Hall of Honor. The ceremony is set for Friday, April 15 at 7:30pm in the SHS auditorium with a gymnasium reception to follow. Both events are fully open to the public. Joining Lindsey in the class of 2016 are fellow alums Rob Decker (1978), Marj Dunnavant (1954), and Charles G. Rhyan (1961). With their inclusion the Hall will have 119 members.

February 15, 2016 - Students at Emerson Elementary are jumping at the chance to fight heart disease and stroke. For the month of February, the students are participating in the annual Jump Rope For Heart event to raise money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for our youth.

November 24, 2015 - Evan Jackson, school counselor at Sidney High School, has been elected as president-elect of the Ohio School Counselor Association (OSCA). Jackson will begin serving his 3-year term in the presidential track as president-elect, president, and past president respectively on January 1, 2016. In this position, Jackson will serve as the representative for all school counselors, counselor educators and student members of the Ohio School Counselor Association. He will support the profession and work with the Ohio Legislature, the Ohio Department of Education and other professional groups to advocate for school counselors.

February 10, 2016– The Sidney City-Wide Spelling Bee took place Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 7pm in the Sidney Middle School auditeria. The bee lasted fifty-four rounds and ended with Joshua George, a sixth grade student from Holy Angels School, correctly spelling the word formicide. Nobel Zhou, an eighth grade student at Sidney Middle School, was the first runner-up; his final work was velodrome. Emily Birkemeier, an eighth grade student at Sidney Middle School, was the second runner-up.

The team brought home the GWOC North championship for the third consecutive year, and placed fifth in the overall GWOC conference, but as they finish out their season, the team says goodbye to Coach Jim McCracken.

November 16, 2015 - Each year, Study Skills students at Sidney Middle School take part in a fundraiser, with the purpose of encouraging students to practice being selfless for a good cause rather than being selfish. This year, the students decided to raise funds to replace Sidney Middle School’s U.S. flag, which flies in front of the school. With the help of the American Legion Post 217 members Chuck Craynon and Dick Snyder, U.S. Marines Ian Setili and Jackson Kirkpatrick, and SMS assistant principal Michel Moore and SMS 6th grade teacher Nish Golden, both veterans, the flags were dedicated on Veterans Day.

Jensen & McCroskey Are State Winners In American Legion American Legion State Winners 2014

SHS sophomore Aaron Jensen, son of Ken and Sherri Jensen, and junior Emily McCroskey, daughter of William and Brenda McCroskey, are State Champions in the American Legion Americanism and Government Test and have each earned an all-expense paid, week-long trip to historic Gettysburg, PA and the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C. The American Legion Department of Ohio sponsors the yearly trip taking the top 3 boys and 3 girls in grades 10-12.

Longfellow Elementary families were treated to a “Sneak Peek at Summer Fun” family night in May. The evening featured games and activities presented by local organizations, all meant to encourage family involvement with the school and allow students the opportunity to learn about summer activities throughout Sidney and Shelby County.

The SHS Academia team completed the GWOC season with a 16-1 mark falling only to Northmont while sweeping the GWOC North schools of Greenville, Troy, Piqua, Vandalia and Trotwood for the fourth straight year. In fact, the Jackets are 75-8 in league competition over the last five years. Varsity Team Members include Aaron Jensen, NourEddine Hijazi, Jack Martin and Tyler Schlagetter.

143rd Commencement Ceremony - 230 Graduate 2014 Graduation

Sidney High School held its one hundred and fourty third commencement ceremony Saturday, May 24th at the Sidney Memorial Stadium, graduating 230 students. It was an especially proud day as this also served as the unofficial public unveiling of the newly completed turf, a project that came together with the support of the Sidney community.

Northwood Fifth Grade Raises Money With Lemonade Stand Northwood 5th Grade Students

Fifth grade students at Northwood Elementary held a lemonade stand last week for charity. They raised $140 by selling cups of lemonade for 25¢ each to students and staff during lunch recess. They voted to donate the proceeds to Shelby County Relay for Life.

SHS Librarian and Media Specialist Morgan Nickolai was recently named one of 100 educators selected for the 2014 PBS LearningMedia Digial Innovators program. Nickolai earned the great distinction of being named one of the top 16 in the nation, earning the title "Lead PBS Digital Innovator." The 2014 PBS LearningMedia Digital Innovators will receive year-long professional development opportunities that include virtual trainings, access to premium and exclusive resources, and invitations to special events. In addition, the top 16 applicants will serve as “Lead PBS Digital Innovators” of the program and will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC, to participate in a two-day digital education summit where participants will engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with peers and hear from digital technology thought leaders.

November 2, 2015 - Yellow Jacket Academia took home second place at Kenyon College Tournament this past weekend. The team went 9-2, only losing to Solon High School, the nation's number one ranked team, twice 220-560 and 315-500. The Jackets dominated the other nine matches, including strong teams like Olentangy Liberty 440-270 and Olmsted Falls 425-250.

Whittier Elementary Students helped raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation during their Hats Off to Luke day. This day honored fellow classmate Luke Bemus who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis. Students who donated money were allowed to wear a hat to school! Luke, standing second from the left, is pictured here with his friends and classmates. Whittier raised more than $600.

JV Academia Wins State History Bowl Championship JV Academia Wins State Championship

On Saturday, March 15, 2014, the SHS Academia team competed in the National History Bowl and Bee Ohio State Championship. The tournament had two divisions – varsity (for players that are juniors and seniors) and junior varsity (for players that are freshmen and sophomores). Sidney’s Junior Varsity team consisting of sophomore Aaron Jensen and freshmen NourEddine Hijazi, Andrew Mitchell, and Anthony Mitchell went 7-0 en route to winning the Ohio History Bowl JV State Championship.

With the help of local organizations like Sidney High School FFA, Shelby Soil and Water, Shelby County Historical Society, and Shelby County Farm Bureau, as well as a number of volunteers, students at Longfellow Elementary got to experiences life on the farm, learning about antique and new farming equipment, caring for animals and the goods animals provide us, understanding the chain of supply from farm to dinner table, and more.

SHS Students Build Model Sustainable City SHS Sustainable City

The SEED II class (Science Engineering Enrichment Discovery) at Sidney High School recently completed and presented their capstone project in which students built a model sustainable city and created a community that ensured residents’ lifestyles and community activities would attempt to conserve energy, promote local economy, and approach carbon neutrality. SEED – Science, Engineering, Enrichment, and Design - is a STEM-modeled learning environment in which science, engineering, technology and mathematics are the foundation for curriculum. The SEED program is a product of 21st Century grant written by the Shelby County Educational Service Center (ESC) and has been in place for five years.

October 23, 2015 - Longfellow Elementary wrapped up our "Get Under the Hood of a Good Book" right to read week last Friday with a visit from local sprint car racer, Brandon Ferguson. Brandon, a SHS graduate and a former Longfellow Elementary student, spoke about the importance of reading, even in racing. He shared about his car, where he races, and how he uses reading and math skills to race faster!

October 16, 2015 - Sidney High School Student Governement held their first blood drive of the school year on Friday, October 16. 99 students registered to donate, 44 of which were first time donors; 83 units of blood were donated for 113% of goal.

October 9, 2015 - Northwood second grade students in Mrs. Hensley and Mrs. Henman's classes got explore science through nature at Tawawa Park today with Lynda Adams from The Shelby County Soil and Water Conservation District, and Sidney Park Ranger, Officer Aselage. The morning was spent learning about and investigating our local ecosystems, as well as understanding the impact of living things on the environment and the impact of the environment on living things. Our other second grade classes will do the same thing later in the month!

October 2, 2015 - Sidney High School Link Crew leaders recently went to the University of Dayton to hear Mike Smith, Nebraska skateboarder and founder of Skate For Change and The BAY, two non-profit organizations. Smith spoke as part of The Harbor Back to School Tour, which introduced The Harbor by Jostens, a new weekly online video series that builds character in students and culture on middle and high school campuses across the United States.

(RCI) recently met with students in the RCI Academy, a new addition to the Workforce Academy at Sidney High School, to learn more about the program from the students and answer questions from the students.

September 9, 2015 – Local comic artist and writer Brian Latimer recently spoke to Sidney High School art and English students about the process of writing and creating a comic book.

State Representative Vitale Speaks to CBI Students Ohio State Representative Nino Vitale speaks to SHS Career-Based Intervention students about his work experiences.

September 8, 2015 - State Representative Nino Vitale visited SHS last week to speak with the Career-Based Intervention classes. He shared his work experience from his first job all the way to the present, including working with companies like Apple Computer, Frigidaire, Wendy’s International, Simonton Windows, and Limited Brands. He currently works at his family’s manufacturing business in Urbana, Ohio. Vitale also spoke about his experiences working in the public sector as a state representative. The students asked a number of engaging questions.

Workforce Partnership partners recently spoke to Emerson Elementary students about the value of good work habits in school as well as later on in life when they are in the workforce. Left to right, Sharon Maurice of the Workforce Partnership, Grant DeYoung of Emerson Climate Technologies, John Bertsch of Detailed Machining, and Ken Schlater of Area Energy and Electric emphasized the importance of showing up every day, being on time, and giving your all, as well as the importance of following the rules and working together. Emerson Elementary has a daily motto of "On time, on task, on target."

HOBY State Leadership Seminars provide youth with unique leadership training to equip them with the tools they need to make a positive change in their home, school, and community. Sidney High School students Mackenzie Bates and Ian Humphrey had the priviledge to attend HOBY this summer.

Sidney Academia Looks to Continue Winning Ways 2015 SHS Academia Team

The Sidney Academic team is coming off its most successful season ever. Last year the team won its seventh straight Shelby County Academia championship and its second straight GWOC North crown. The team finished as state runner up in the Ohio Academic Competition State Championships and third place at the NAQT Ohio State Championships. As well as 34th and 29th place finishes in two national tournaments. The team looks to continue its winning ways despite losing two seniors.

2016 Graduation Date Change

On Monday, June 16, the Sidney City Schools Board of Education voted to change the date of graduation for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year, moving it from May 28, 2016 to May 21, 2016. This change is primarily due to the fact that the originally scheduled date was almost two full weeks after the last day for seniors and one full week after the last day of school for all others.
